BY CAR

A car is probably the easiest way to get around Miyako, as many beaches and sights are not easily reached by public transportation. You can either hire a cab or rent a car yourself. For regulations on driving in Japan and the recognition of your national or international driving license, please contact your embassy or consulate.

CAR RENTALS

Cars are available to rent from about 3,000 Yen for 24 hours. On request, most companies will pick you up at the airport. The rental fee normally includes an insurance and some cars are equipped with a (Japanese) navigation system.
Rental fees depend mostly on what kind of car you want - a car with a yellow numberplaid (kei jidōsha, lower engine power, less fuel consumption) or white numberplate (futsū jidōsha, higher enginge power, higher fuel consumption). If you do not have to transport large amounts of luggage, a yellow plated car will be sufficient for up to three people, as the island's speed limit is 40km/h on most roads.

Daiko
The legal blood alcohol limit in Japan is zero. Drink driving is severly punished in Japan and treated with no tolerance. Therefore, the daiko chauffeur system has been established. You call a daiko (or have somebody calling for you if you don't feel confident to give the right directions) and a driver picks you and your car up anywhere on the island and then drives you back home in your car. The service is only slightly more expensive then a cab, normally approx. 1,000 yen for the first 5 km and 200 yen per additional kilometer.

By Bus

On Miyako mainland you can chose from six bus routes, as well as routes connecting Ikema and Kurima islands with the main island. Tickets can be purchased on the bus.

BY FERRY

Irabu Island is easily accessed by ferry from the main Miyako island. Ferries run between Hirara Port (Miyako) and Sarahama Port (Irabu).
